Get ready to flex those origami skills, because Waverley Library is hosting a paper crane extravaganza for World Origami Day. November 11 is not just any day; it's also Remembrance Day, which makes it the perfect time to fold some peace-themed paper cranes. Japan has turned the humble crane into a symbol of hope and tranquility after World War II, so what better way to honor the day than by getting your fingers a bit crumpled and turning some paper into masterpieces?
Now, if you're wondering why cranes are the star of the show, let me introduce you to Sadako Sasaki. This brave little soul was just two years old when the bomb fell on Hiroshima in 1955, and she spent her days folding cranes in the hopes of healing from the effects of radiation. Before she passed away ten years later, she created 644 cranes, leaving a legacy that has inspired folks around the globe. These days, many people fold cranes and send them off to the statue of Sadako in Hiroshima's Peace Park. So come along, make some cranes, and channel your inner origami genius while being part of something truly meaningful. Free fun awaits, but don't forget to register because space might be tighter than a well-folded paper swan.
When: Monday 11th November 2024, 9:30am - 4pm
